Book 4 · Chapter 23

Real Madmen Are Rare, and Leaders Are Missing

An excerpt from “Putin’s Double in USA,” the fourth book in The Adventures of Putin’s Double.
You can’t live under the rule of someone else’s embassy.

The Double (formerly Slava Fridlyand, a.k.a. Shpak)

Amy brought me to an old club where four silver-haired senators spoke without cameras. I said it plainly: my elections are designed to convince the people they love me. They answered that theirs had been turned into a circus. I asked them to list what worries them, and got a ten-point manifesto. Then we knelt and prayed, though none of us knew the others’ words. We left feeling that nothing was lost yet.

Senator Hughes (Texas)

The left builds an electorate in its own image even out of power. We call it the “Transition Plan”: a hard audit of all federal programs, a freeze on USAID and NED grants, transparency for contractors. I brought folders so he’d see it isn’t rumor.

Senator Barnes (Florida)

I laid out spring 2019 by date: the Human Rights Watch open letter, the NGO coalition’s “red lines,” the “Reanimation Package of Reforms.” All public, a documentary trail. After that it’s only interpretation.

The double leaves feeling the Republicans aren’t ready yet but need a push. He, in turn, needs cadres he doesn’t have and teachers he is starting to gather. Tomorrow he’ll go to Mexico, sit as a beggar outside a ministry, and compare the people at the border with the people in suits.
